A group of analysts challenges traditional metrics for decentralized finance (DeFi) with the launch of a new valuation framework, WPVS. This model addresses flaws in the Total Value Locked (TVL) metric, impacting how lending protocols are assessed, specifically Clearpool.
TVL has been the go-to metric for evaluating DeFi lending protocols. However, it currently misrepresents the activity of these platforms. When protocols lend out capital, TVL drops, creating a misleading impression of performance. In contrast, when funds are idle but TVL is up, it inaccurately reflects success. "The idle bank looks healthier than the active one," said an analyst.
The new WPVS framework categorizes pools into four types:
Active Lending Pools (utilization rate measures active loans)
Treasury / Savings Vaults (instruments like T-Bills)
Real World Credit Vaults (involves housing and trade finance)
Market Neutral / Arbitrage Vaults (delta-neutral strategies)
Each type employs a unique valuation formula to ensure accurate comparisons. For example, the Lending Score emphasizes current deployment, while Treasury Scores utilize TVL appropriately due to their idle nature.
"Using TVL for all types distorts comparisons," noted one user. The weighted scores ultimately combine to form the WPVS.
Clearpool has shown robust activity, with $937M in loans and zero defaults since April 2022. By April 2026, the protocol's WPVS was estimated at approximately $294M. Notably, Clearpool's market cap is selling at only 8 cents per dollar of its protocol value, indicating possible undervaluation.
"This might be one of the best-kept secrets in the lending game," a community member commented.
Currently, WPVS is in v1.0, revealing limitations like recency bias and the importance of default history, which needs clearer delineation as more data are gathered. An upcoming version aims to improve how secured versus unsecured lending is assessed.
โOnly time will tell if this framework gains traction,โ concluded a seasoned analyst within the community.

This innovative approach could reshape how people evaluate lending protocols and challenge existing metrics in the DeFi space.
Experts estimate a strong chance that the WPVS framework will influence how new lending protocols structure their valuation models. As the DeFi space evolves, more protocols may adopt similar methodologies to improve transparency and accuracy in their assessments. With additional data from real-world lending activities, analysts predict that WPVS 2.0 will introduce essential adjustments, potentially increasing its adoption rate to over 60% among emerging lending platforms by mid-2027. This shift could reshape investor perceptions, placing a stronger emphasis on actual lending performance rather than misleading total locked values, leading to a more accurate reflection of a protocol's success and sustainability.
One of the less obvious parallels can be found in the evolution of real estate valuations during the 2008 financial crisis. Just as lenders were overly reliant on inflated property values to gauge risk, the DeFi space is now grappling with outdated metrics like TVL that fail to reflect true financial health. In both scenarios, a transformative approach emerged from the rubble, shifting focus from superficial numbers to tangible performances. As property values plummeted, new frameworks emerged, similar to WPVSโs aim, refocusing on risk and actual cash flow, ultimately providing a more stable foundation for future investment. Such shifts show how necessity drives innovation, revealing deeper truths obscured by traditional metrics.
